The benefits of facial reflexology
Facial reflexology is one of those treatments that tends to surprise people. Most come expecting something similar to a facial, and leave having experienced something altogether more profound. Because while facial reflexology does leave the skin looking brighter and more radiant, what sets it apart is what it does beneath the surface.
What is facial reflexology?
Like foot reflexology, facial reflexology is based on the principle that specific points on the face correspond to organs, systems and structures throughout the body. By applying gentle, targeted pressure to these reflex points, the treatment works to support the body from the inside out, addressing not just how the skin looks, but how the body feels.
The practice has roots in several ancient healing traditions, including Traditional Chinese Medicine, and was developed into the method I use today by Ziggie Bergman at the London School of Reflexology. It combines elements of reflexology, massage and lymphatic drainage to create a treatment that is as therapeutic as it is deeply relaxing.
The benefits for your skin
One of the most immediate and visible effects of facial reflexology is on the skin itself. By stimulating facial nerves and increasing oxygen and blood flow to the face, the treatment encourages lymphatic drainage and helps to relieve congestion, leaving the skin clearer, brighter and more even in tone.
Regular sessions can also stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for keeping skin firm and plump. Over time, this can help to soften the appearance of fine lines, reduce puffiness and bring a natural radiance to the complexion that no topical product can quite replicate. Many clients notice a visible difference after just one session.
The benefits for your whole body
What makes facial reflexology particularly powerful is that its effects extend well beyond the skin. Because the face maps to the entire body, working with facial reflex points can support a wide range of health concerns, many of which have nothing to do with the face at all.
Facial reflexology can be particularly supportive for:
Stress and anxiety
Tension headaches and jaw tension
Sinus congestion
Hormonal imbalances
Digestive issues
Low immunity
Fatigue and low energy
Poor sleep and low mood
By encouraging the nervous system to shift into a parasympathetic state, what we might call rest and restore, the treatment creates a deep sense of calm that extends well beyond the session itself. Many clients describe feeling lighter, clearer and more settled in the hours and days afterwards.
What to expect from a session
A facial reflexology session with me begins with a brief consultation to understand your current health and what you would like support with. You will then lie back comfortably while I work through a systematic sequence of reflex points across the face, using a combination of precise pressure and gentle massage techniques.
The experience is deeply relaxing and it is completely normal to drift off during the treatment. Afterwards, most clients notice an immediate glow to the skin alongside a profound sense of calm. I always close the session with aftercare advice tailored to you.
Sessions last 60 minutes and are available at The Therapy Loft in Forest Hill, SE London. Facial reflexology can also be combined with foot reflexology as part of the Foot and Facial Reflexology Ritual, or alongside nutritional therapy as part of the Summer Wellness Ritual.
Is facial reflexology right for you?
Facial reflexology is suitable for most adults and works well as both a standalone treatment and as part of a broader approach to health and wellbeing. It is particularly well suited to those who carry stress in the face and jaw, experience hormonal fluctuations, want to support their skin from within, or are simply looking for a deeply restorative treatment that does more than scratch the surface.
